Labiaplasty in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills
Labiaplasty surgery is a well-established and safe surgery that is designed to decrease the size of the labia minora, or lips, that line the external opening of the vagina (vulva). Labiaplasty is also known as 'Labial Reduction' or 'Labia Minora Surgery.' If you are considering labiaplasty surgery, please schedule a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Karamanoukian by calling (310) 998-5533.
In the Los Angeles area, Labiaplasty is performed by Dr. Karamanoukian in an outpatient setting. It may be combined in association with a gynecologist during vaginal tightening surgery.
Many women who have excessively large labia majora suffer with the problem for years without knowing that there is a simple cure for their condition. The labia minora is an important element in the aesthetic appearance of the pubic area and also performs a vital role in maintaining the hygeine and moisture content of the inner female genitalia. When it is enlarged, the labia minora may interfere with normal hygeine, daily activities such as sitting or sports, and may result in significant pain during sexual intercourse.
Patients often present to our Los Angeles office with cosmetic complaints about the increased size of their outer labial, or with functional complaints of pain and discomfort with sexual activity or daily living. During labiaplasty, the labia minora ( the outer lips lining the entrance of the vagina) is reduced. The surgical procedure is performed with the combined use of local anesthesia and other anesthetics in an outpatient surgical center.
In some patients, labiaplasty is performed on both the right and left labia minora in a similar fashion, while in others, there is marked assymetry of the lips that requires meticulous surgical technique to reestablish symmetry.
On initial consultation, Dr. Karamanoukian will discuss the options for labial reduction surgery in depth using clinical images. Since this is a common, yet sensitive problem for most patients, it is not necessary to undergo a complete examination during your first consultation. The discussion should focus on the techniques available for labial reduction and the method of treatment.
Labia minora reduction is caused by a variety of factors, including a history of pregnancy, vaginal delivery, or laxity of the skin and soft tissue due to genetic factors. Labial hypertrophy can occur at any age and there are many young females who have this problem as a result of normal development during puberty. In our Los Angeles office, labiaplasty is performed on females above the age of 18 unless there is a reconstructive component that requires earlier attention.
Symptoms associated with enlarged labia include emotional distress, discomfort while wearing clothing that is tight-fitting, tenderness during normal activities of daily living such as sitting at a desk for extended periods of time, pain during intimacy, hygeine, or constant friction or contact with clothing during the day.
The decision to undergo labial reduction surgery or labiaplasty is an important one. In the Los Angeles area, Dr. Karamanoukian sees patients in consultation for labial reduction in his office in Santa Monica. The results of surgery are intended to improve self-esteem among women suffering from this condition and to reduce the discomfort, pain, and hygeine issues that are caused by labial enlargement.

Reduction of the Mons Pubis - Liposuction of the Pubic Mound - Los Angeles
It is not uncommon for women to complain of the size and proportion of the mons pubis. After all, current fashion mandates tighter fitting exercise clothes, bikinis, and jeans.
Regardless of body weight, the mons pubis may contain more hormone-dependent fat that is less responsive to traditional methods of diet and exercise. Despite weight loss, the mons pubis may still remain large in proportion to the abdomen, thighs, and legs. In these situations, a mons pubis reduction is performed to reduce the 'flabbiness' of the mons pubis and allow women to wear tighter fitting clothes without embarrassment.
Patients who are candidates for mons pubis reduction may be of normal weight or overweight. Weight, per se, does not preclude a patient from undergoing mons pubis reduction. Treatment options include surgical excision of skin and fat; or less invasive liposuction of the mons pubis to reduce the overall protrusion of the pubis fat.
Surgical excision of skin and fat in the area of the mons pubis can be performed alone or in combination with a tummy tuck procedure. In this surgery, a concealed incision is made in the hairline of the pubic mound. This incision is then used to remove excessive fat and skin from the area of the pubis. Surgical excision is ideal for patients who have skin redundancy after massive weight loss, multiple pregnancies, or massive weight gain. The surgery has minimal downtime and patients are able to resume work within a relatively short period of time.
Liposuction of the mons pubis is performed in patients who do not have excessive skin, but are concerned about the protrusion of the pubis. In this procedure, the mons pubis is reduced using two concealed incisions that are each smaller than the diameter of a pencil eraser. These incisions are then used to remove excess fat in the pubic area. There is no concern for sensory nerve damage with liposuction (also in surgical excision) and patients are able to resume work relatively quickly.
A newer technique of ultrasound assisted liposuction is also used to reduce the mons pubis in patients who have minimal skin redundancy with excess fat in the mons pubis. In this procedure, the ultrasound liposuction induces skin shrinkage in addition to fat removal. The procedure is ideal after pregnancy or in young patients who are concerned about aesthetic contour alongside fat reduction.
Cost varies with each procedure, with surgical excision costing the most. Liposuction alone, ultrasound-assisted liposuction, and surgical excision may or may not require anesthesia, depending on the severity of the problem and the overall medical health of the patient.
