Eyelid Surgery Los Angeles

Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is an eyelid surgeon and one of the top plastic surgeons to correct droopy eyelids and heavy eyelids in Los Angeles

An upper eyelid blepharoplasty is the procedure of choice for those patients who have excessive eyelid skin and droopiness of the upper eyelids.  With age, there are characteristic changes in the upper eyelids.  We tend to notice that the eyelids become more heavy, with the development of excessive eyelid skin, eyelid fat bags, and a general droopiness and heaviness of the eyelids.  Since this happens over years instead of months, patients gradually notice that these changes are creeping up on them, only to wake up one day noticing that the eyelids appear more aged than the rest of the face and body.

The eyelid skin contains a very thin dermis, thus it is very prone to the normal aging process.  Areas with thin dermal thickness tend to wrinkle and loosen faster than those areas with a thick dermis. Thus, the eyelids tend to age faster than other parts of the face.

In terms of the upper eyelids, the ideal cosmetic surgery option is one that is less invasive, quick, and is associated with a quick recovery.  The gold standard for upper eyelid rejuvenation remains the blepharoplasty procedure.   A blepharoplasty is commonly referred to as an upper eyelid tuck, in which excess skin and fat is removed from the upper eyelid.  The removal of the skin and fat opens up the eyes and allows you to restore youtfullness to the periorbital area.

The first step in understanding a blepharoplasty procedure is to read the detailed discussion presented herein.  To determine whether you are a candidate for upper eyelid rejuvenation and blepharoplasty, you will need to schedule a consultation with board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian.  During your consultation, Dr. Karamanoukian will examine your eyelids relative to your whole face and recommend a procedure that will provide you with a natural improvement in facial contour.

An upper blepharoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic facial procedures performed in plastic surgery.  It remains a natural option for those patients who want an improvement without compromising their natural features.  The details of an upper blepharoplasty procedure are presented herein.

During a blepharoplasty, detailed measurements of your eyelid skin and eyelid crease are made to determine the position of your natural eyelid shape and features.  The tarsal crease is measured and confirmed in relation to your ethnicity, as Caucasians, Pacific Islanders, Asians, and African Americans usually have distinct measurements for tarsal crease height.  By making these measurements, the patient is assured that the results fall in line with their own natural features. Once the measurements are made, the amount of excess skin is measured and marked.  The surgery is begun with removal of the excess skin and removal of fat bags that are referred to as the medial and central orbital fat pads.  These fat bags cause excessive droopiness of the eyelids, leading to premature aging.  By removing the fat bags on the upper eyelids, the weight of the upper eyelids is lifted.  The procedure effectively opens up the eyelids and improves the peripheral field of vision.

Once the skin and fat is removed, the eyelid is reexamined and the incision sutured in order to lift the lateral aspect of the eyelid.  In doing so, the eyelid resumes its normal youthful shape and size.  The goal of blepharoplasty surgery with Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is not to remove excess skin, but to restore YOUR own natural eyelid features.

Patients are exhilarated by the results and are often thrilled that they can regain their peripheral field of vision.  In other words, patients notice that they can expand their field of vision in the upper fields.  This is particularly helpful in patients who need their line of sight improved for work.  Adult patients who require an expanded field of vision, or who feel tired after using the computer for hours, benefit tremendously with the procedure.

Our office recommends an upper eyelid blepharoplasty for those patients who have developed excessive hooding of the upper eyelids, coupled with eyelid heaviness and a gradual loss of peripheral vision.  During your consultation, Dr. Karamanoukian will examine your peripheral vision and determine if this is a concern in your particular case.  Given the improvements in facial youtfullness with an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, it remains and important and sought after cosmetic procedure for the face.

Can I undergo an upper eyelid blepharoplasty under local anesthesia? Upper eyelid blepharoplasty can dramatically improve the youtfullness of the eyelid area.  Most patients choose to undergo this procedure under local anesthesia.  If you would prefer not to undergo the procedure with local anesthesia, our surgical team and board certified anesthesiologists can schedule the procedure under anesthesia.  Rest assured, that the anesthesia options available will allow you to undergo a blepharoplasty with the highest standards of safety. In either case, we ask that you arrange a ride home as our office cannot discharge you from the surgery center after blepharoplasty without a caretaker.

Why do I need to arrange a ride home after blepharoplasty? Despite the fact that a blepharoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, it is important that you do not drive immediately after your surgery.  We recommend that you place ice packs on the eyelids after blepharoplasty so that you reduce the risk of bruising and swelling after surgery.   Although you will have normal vision after your surgery, the swelling may impair your ability to safely drive home by yourself.  Our office will confirm your pickup with you during your preoperative appointment.

How long do upper eyelid blepharoplasty results last? An upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a longlasting procedure that will likely yield results for decades after the surgery.  Revision blepharoplasty is rarely needed as the excess skin and excess orbital fat bags are not very likely to recur.

Can I combine the upper eyelid blepharoplasty with a resurfacing laser? Blepharoplasty procedures are ideal cosmetic surgery treatments to combine with resurfacing lasers.  We recommend the fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing system by DEKA as an excellent dual modality to reduce wrinkles on the face in association with a blepharoplasty.  During your preoperative consultation for blepharoplasty, Dr. Karamanoukian can review your skin type and level of wrinkling to determine if the Fractional CO2 system will work for you.  Treatments can be combined to improve the periorbital area as well as the face and neck areas.

Do you perform the blepharoplasty procedure is Santa Monica? Our plastic surgery practice is located in Santa Monica and serves the greater Los Angeles areas.  All blepharoplasty procedures are performed in a private operating room that is accredited as an outpatient surgery center.  The procedures are performed under local anesthesia, regional anesthesia, or general anesthesia depending on patient preference and medical history.

Can upper and lower blepharoplasty be performed simultaneously?  A total eyelid rejuvenation includes an upper and lower blepharoplasty that is performed simultaneously to remove excess fat and excess skin from the eyelid area.  The importance of the eyelids and facial rejuvenation can not be underestimated.  The eyes are a focal point on the face and precision cosmetic surgery can redefine and recontour a more youthful compression on the face by contouring the upper and lower eyelids simultaneously.  The procedure is known as blepharoplasty and can address excess fat, excess skin, and lateral eyelid hooding.  The procedure is performed in association with a face lift or as a standalone procedure for facial rejuvenation.  In the Los Angeles plastic surgery office of Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, upper and lower eyelid rejuvenation can be preformed under local anesthesia, conscious sedation, or general anesthesia.  Treatments can address the heaviness or the eyelids and the excessive hooding resulting from genetics, family history, and sun exposure.  If you are absolutely tired of having droopy eyelids that make you look older and more tired, eyelid rejuvenation is an ideal choice for cosmetic plastic surgery.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is an expert in eyelid blepharoplasty and uses meticulous techniques in removing the excess fat skin.  The results appear natural and well defined relative to the entire face.

How long does an upper and lower eyelid procedure take to perform?  Upper and lower eyelid surgeries can be performed alone or in combination with another type of cosmetic plastic surgery.  When performed simultaneously with larger procedures, blepharoplasty can be completed under general anesthesia or conscious sedation.  When blepharoplasty is performed alone, Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian recommends light sedation or local anesthesia for the procedure.  During your consultation you will have the opportunity to discuss the specific procedure of choice for your eyelid rejuvenation, whether it be for the upper or lower eyelids.  Eyelid blepharoplasty can redefine and recontour the face in a very natural fashion.  The results appeared well defined and age appropriate and can dramatically improve the youthfulness of the face as well as reduce the look of tiredness and fatigue.  If you have been thinking about upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty, now is the time to schedule an appointment with Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian.  Upper eyelid blepharoplasty takes about one hour to perform, whereas lower eyelid blepharoplasty takes about one hour and 30 minutes to complete.  Anesthesia choices for blepharoplasty will dictate the length and time of the procedure and the estimated recovery after surgery.
